SBIC Bank is a California-based, FDIC-insured subsidiary of State Bank of India (SBI) and a trusted resource for US-based Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) managing financial ties between the U.S. and India. We offer three core services for the NRI community:
US-side banking: Personal and business checking, savings, CDs, and remittances, all opened and held at SBIC Bank in the U.S.
Remittances to India: Send money to India via wire transfer or SendMoneyEZ®, zero transfer fees online.
Attestation and facilitation: Document attestation and KYC verification for NRE, NRO, FCNR, and Home Loan applications at SBI branches in India. SBIC verifies and signs off; the accounts are opened by SBI in India, not by SBIC Bank.
SBIC Bank can attest documents for the following India-held account types. Here's how they differ:
For money you earn abroad and want to send to India. Interest is tax-free in India, and the account is fully repatriable; you can move funds back to the U.S. at any time. Held in Indian rupees. Available as a savings, checking, or fixed deposit account. (Not insured by FDIC — held at SBI.)
For income earned in India: rent, pension, dividends. Interest is taxable in India at source. Repatriation is permitted up to approximately USD $1 million per year with the required documentation. Can be opened jointly with a resident Indian. (Not insured by FDIC — held at SBI.)
A fixed deposit held in U.S. Dollars, Pound Sterling, or Euro, designed to hedge against rupee exchange-rate risk. Fully repatriable. (Not insured by FDIC — held at SBI.)
For NRIs or PIOs returning to India permanently after living abroad. Held in U.S. Dollars currently. Can be converted to an FCNR or NRE account if the account holder becomes an NRI again. (Not insured by FDIC — held at SBI.)
These accounts are held in India and accepted in accordance with Reserve Bank of India and SBI rules. They are not obligations of SBIC Bank or any SBI subsidiary in the USA. For interest rates and account details, visit bank.sbi.
